  • Heroes of the Valley

Jonathan Stroud, David Thorn, Listening Library

Audiobook (Listening Library, Jan. 27, 2009)
Halli Sveinsson has grown up in the House of Svein, listening to the legends of the heroes as all his forefathers did. His is a peaceful society where the violence of the past has been outlawed and disputes are settled by the Council. But young Halli has never quite seemed to fit in with the others. For starters, he was not at all handsome or tall, like his attractive blond siblings. He's stumpy and swarthy, with a quick mind and aptitude for getting in trouble. Bored with the everyday chores and sheep herding, he can't help himself from playing practical jokes on everyone, from Eyjolf the old servant, to his brother and sister. But when he plays a trick on Ragnor of the House of Hakonsson, he goes too far, setting in motion a chain of events that will forever alter his destiny. Because of it, Halli will have to leave home and go on a hero's quest. Along the way, he will encounter highway robbers, terrifying monsters, and a girl who may finally be his match. In the end, he will discover the truth about the legends, his family, and himself. Jonathan Stroud's new work is a hero's saga and coming-of-age, as well as a surprising look at what bravery really means.

Le Lys dans la Vallée (The Lily of the Valley) is an 1835 novel about love and society by French novelist and playwright Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850). It concerns the affection — emotionally vibrant but never consummated — between Felix de Vandenesse and Henriette de Mortsauf. It is part of his series of novels (or Roman-fleuve) known as La Comédie humaine (The Human Comedy), which parodies and depicts French society in the period of the Bourbon Restoration and the July Monarchy (1815–1848). In his novel he also mentions the chateau Azay-le-Rideau, which can still be visited today.

  • Valley of the Bees

    Amanda L. Webster

language (Elderfly Press, March 1, 2017)
Kirkus Reviews calls Valley of the Bees, "A tale that offers mesmerizing worldbuilding and complex explorations of gender relations in a frightening dystopia."In a world where honeybees are all but extinct, Valley has spent her entire life in the tranquil river bottoms where her family camps out every summer and grows more food than most folks can dream of. But, that’s all about to change on her sixteenth birthday when her Uncle Jacob informs her that she will be marrying the son of the powerful mayor of a nearby town. When Valley agrees to meet the boy and give him a chance, she is plunged into the intrigues of an unforgiving village where women are treated like property. In the midst of a plague outbreak, Valley must fight for her father’s life and for the right to make her own decisions, all while learning that her family life is not as idyllic as she always thought it was. This edition of Valley of the Bees includes all three eBooks in one beautiful text!Kirkus Reviews:"Webster has written a richly detailed work whose world feels legitimate and lived-in, letting readers gradually, seamlessly experience it, rather than overwhelming them with exposition. Meanwhile, Valley is an empathetic, compassionate protagonist who feels three-dimensional from start to finish. Her caring for the bees establishes an instant connection with the reader. The complications of her friendship with another teenager, Reyna, who has fallen in love with her, as well as the intricate bonds that tie her to her family make for an engrossing drama. Furthermore, her relationship with her grandmother, as well as the unfolding of a number of buried family secrets that cause her to question a great deal of what she thought she knew, provides a brilliant through line."
